Retiree Group Calls on Rep. Clyburn to Spare Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid from Budget Axe

South Carolina Representative Serves on Fiscal “Super Committee”

A national retiree group is urging its members in South Carolina’s 6th congressional district to contact U.S. Representative Jim Clyburn to protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.  Representative Clyburn is a member of the congressional “Super Committee” that is charged with recommending at least $1.2 trillion in federal spending cuts by November 23.

“Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are how millions of retirees are able to afford to stay healthy and pay their bills.  It would be outrageous for Congress to cut these lifelines for seniors, but yet turn a blind eye toward tax cuts for Wall Street and big corporations,” said Edward F. Coyle, Executive Director of the Alliance, who recorded phone calls to nearly 1,000 South Carolina seniors in the 6th district to urge them to contact Representative Clyburn.

The Alliance for Retired Americans and the Strengthen Social Security campaign recently released a study showing the importance of these three programs to South Carolina’s 6th congressional district.  Approximately 150,000 of its residents are helped by these programs, which spend a total of about $4.2 billion a year in the district and help one out of every five residents.  This report can found at http://bit.ly/tvTABJ.
